Never have I ever found a city like Charleston in all my travels—which are largely limited so please keep that in mind haha. If nothing else this trip proves you don’t need a passport to travel back in time or suffer long hours of layovers to visit somewhere different. Just hours down the road is a place where I’ve left my heart.
Charleston is the true Southern Belle of the South
My hubby and I made the trip to see Blink 182 (check out my post on must-see nostalgic bands ) and crammed in a day and a half of adventures. Although this meant fitting a lot in with a little time, it also means we have SO much left to taste and see. That being said here’s a few tested & approved suggestions for your stay.
Try a food tour and taste the city
In my opinion, the Charleston food scene is unrivaled. When using “Ask Facebook” we received more recommendations than our stomachs would be able to handle so we opted for a food tour in hopes of getting a chance to try them all. Since the tour changes it was a gamble and actually included zero recommendations we were cited, however, we were pleasantly surprised and found a few favorites!
We took the Downtown Charleston Culinary Tour…and that was the last we ate for 24 hours. The guide was crazy informative and fun and the spread included famous stops along with signature dishes. This was a great way to try multiple meals in a few hours and hear why the item was selected for the tour. EVERYTHING we tasted was exceptional, but my favorites came from Poogan’s Porch, which included smoked Gouda mac & cheese, brisket sandwiches, fried chicken and homemade hot sauce that I wish I had asked to bottle. We ended the tour with a sweet stop at the award-winning dessert location, Kaminsky’s, for delicious dessert martinis and pie.
Take a stroll down Rainbow Row
After all that eating a much-needed nap or walk was in order. We opted for a walk around the city and came across rainbow row, a strip of brightly-colored homes used to incorporate a Caribbean-feel as a nod to the town’s coastal roots. Follow the long walkway that hugs the water and you’ll find yourself between two local parks, each with their own personality and charm.
My personal favorite find was Waterfront Park. Soak up the sunshine and step into one of the two fountains that call for you to cool off– one of which was a giant pineapple! If you’d prefer to stay dry, grab an ice cream from the vendor by the water and enjoy the porch swings scattered along the pier to take in this one-of-a-kind view.
Take it to the top
While waiting for our food tour to kick-off, we whet our appetites with a quick drink overlooking the city at the Pavilion Bar. It’s easy to see why this hotel why ranked the #1 small city hotel in the U.S. AND Canada (in addition to #52 out of the entire WORLD). Head to the top for a view of all things Charleston below and a curated rooftop pool right in front of you – sadly for hotel guests only #cryingemoji.
Find Hidden Treasures at the City Market
After dropping in for a couple lattes at City Lights, we strolled the City Market stretching across roads and roads of cobblestone. Take your time visiting each both for something special to the city like our take homes which included Charleston Bloody Mary mix, grits and hand-woven baskets.
Sadly our trip came to an end without trying the carriage rides, haunted tours or a drive up to Folly beach. But there’s always next time ;). Anything I should add to this list?
